Greenville at the forefront of U.S. recovery

Greenville, a major upstate S.C. city, has recently been receiving a lot of positive attention from media outlets. According to the Wall Street Journal, Greenville’s vibrant economy is set to lead the country in post-pandemic recovery. Even prior to Covid-19, Greenville was seeing exponential growth, with its combination of city life and affordable housing proving attractive to newcomers. The affordability of Greenville, along with its growing metropolitan area, allowed the city to become a popular commuter town for those working in the nearby cities of Atlanta and Charlotte. Greenville’s growth was only strengthened by the pandemic-fueled economic downturn, due to its shorter shut-down periods in comparison with the rest of the country. With the majority of jobs in Greenville dedicated to tech, manufacturing, and finance, the city was largely able to avoid layoffs and withstand the economic downturn at the beginning of the pandemic. Employment in the Greenville area grew 11.9% by March 2021 from its lowest point in April 2020, compared with the 10.9% of the country as a whole.

Fewer lockdowns and restrictions during the pandemic allowed Greenville to capitalize on its growing tourism industry. A recent article posted on Thrillist named Greenville as the “coolest weekend city” in the country, a title previously given to larger cities, such as Portland, O.R., or Austin, T.X. Visitors are often lured to Greenville by its charming downtown area, home to Falls Park on the Reedy, a 32-acre park with views of the 60-foot waterfall on the Reedy River. In addition to downtown’s astonishing views, tourists are attracted to Greenville’s “booming” food and art scene. With 120 restaurants and 17 breweries located within a ten-block radius in the city’s downtown area, as well as the diverse plethora of independent art studios in West Greenville’s art district, it’s no wonder Greenville is becoming one of the most popular cities to relocate to.
