IKEA's New Curtains Will Purify the Air In Your Home

It's true that the harder your home works, the less you have to. And IKEA’s newest developing product—a curtain panel that purifies the air inside your home—is guaranteed to do just that. No longer will you have to worry about indoor air pollutants potentially causing harm to your family.

The curtain, that'll land in stores next year, is made with a mineral-based surface treatment. When paired with sunlight, the surface can break down air pollutants. If that process sounds familiar, it’s because it mimics the way photosynthesis works in nature.

The technology used in the curtain took several years to develop. “GUNRID is the first product to use the technology, but the development will give us opportunities for future applications on other textiles,” said Lena Pripp-Kovac, Head of Sustainability at Inter IKEA Group, in a statement.

IKEA is already a leading retailer in affordable home furniture and accessories. And with the GUNRID air-purifying curtain, it’s also establishing itself as an eco-friendly decor resource.

In addition to the GUNRID curtain, IKEA has worked to reduce air pollution with its Better Air Now! Initiative. The effort helped develop new ways to reduce air emissions during production operations and establish ways to use recyclable materials in products.

“Besides enabling people to breathe better air at home, we hope that GUNRID will increase people’s awareness of indoor air pollution, inspiring behavioral changes that contribute to a world of clean air,” said Lena.

IKEA has not released a price for the GUNRID curtain, but it will be available for purchase in stores next year.

Until then, invest your energy into other ways to purify your home’s air and live a greener life. Many houseplants clean the air naturally and, as a bonus, look pretty while they work. Use natural home cleaners and always do your best to keep hazardous chemicals out of your home.
